Inverter Buying Guide for Surat Homes: Size It Right the First Time
How to choose the right inverter and battery for your Surat home — real load calculations, VA vs watts explained, battery types compared, and mistakes to avoid.

Step 1: List What Must Run During a Cut

Notice what's not on the list: AC, geyser, iron, microwave, fridge. Heating and cooling appliances drain any reasonable battery in minutes. (Fridges can be backed up, but they need a larger system — tell your electrician if that's a priority.)
Step 2: Convert Watts to Inverter Size (VA)
Inverters are rated in VA, not watts, and the two differ by the power factor (~0.8 for homes). The formula:
Required VA = Total watts ÷ 0.8
For our example: 404 ÷ 0.8 = 505 VA. Now add 25–30% headroom for startup surges and future needs: 650–700 VA minimum, and in practice we'd recommend a 900–1100 VA unit for this home — the price difference is small and the headroom prevents overload trips when someone plugs in one thing more.
Step 3: Size the Battery for Your Backup Hours
Battery capacity (Ah) determines how long things run. The working formula:
Backup hours ≈ (Battery Ah × 12 V × 0.8) ÷ load in watts
A standard 150 Ah battery with our 404 W load: (150 × 12 × 0.8) ÷ 404 ≈ 3.5 hours — comfortable for Surat's typical outage pattern. If your area sees longer cuts, a 200 Ah battery or double-battery setup extends that proportionally.
Flat Plate vs Tubular vs Lithium
- Flat plate — cheapest, charges fast, lifespan 3–4 years. Fine for areas with rare, short cuts.
- Tall tubular — the Surat default. 4–6 year lifespan, handles deep discharge, tolerates our summer heat better. Worth the extra ₹3,000–₹5,000 for most homes.
- Lithium (LiFePO₄) — 8–10 year life, zero maintenance, half the weight, no fumes — and roughly 2.5× the price. Increasingly sensible for premium flats where the battery lives indoors.
Whatever you choose, the battery needs a ventilated spot away from bedrooms (lead-acid types vent gases while charging) and a proper stand — two details cheap installations skip.
The 5 Mistakes We See Constantly
- Buying by budget, not load. The ₹4,000 difference between wrong and right is far cheaper than replacing the system in a year.
- Wiring the whole house through the inverter. Then the geyser or AC silently lands on battery and kills the backup. The right way is a dedicated backup circuit covering only your chosen points.
- No changeover check. A proper installation switches over so fast your WiFi doesn't blink. If your PC restarts during a cut, the wiring needs attention, not the inverter.
- Ignoring the battery's water schedule. Tubular batteries need distilled-water top-ups every 3–6 months. A ₹0 habit that doubles battery life.
- Undersized cabling between inverter and battery. Thin cable here means voltage drop, slow charging, and heat. It's a 10-minute fix that most owners never know they need.
