5 Warning Signs Your Home Is Headed for an Electrical Fire
Electrical fires give warnings for weeks before they start. A Surat electrician explains the 5 signs — smells, sounds, heat, and light patterns — you must not ignore.

In twelve years of electrical work across Surat, we've been called to the aftermath of house and shop fires more times than we'd like. Talking to the owners afterwards, one pattern repeats with brutal consistency: the installation gave warnings — for weeks — and the warnings were noticed, mentioned, and postponed.
Electrical fires almost never come from nowhere. Insulation degrades, joints loosen, contacts carbonize — gradually, detectably. Here are the five warnings, what each one physically means, and what to do the day you notice it.
1. The Fishy / Burning Plastic Smell
Overheating PVC insulation and thermoplastic switch bodies give off a distinctive smell — most people describe it as burnt fish, acrid plastic, or "something electrical." It's strongest near the source but can drift rooms away through conduits.
What it means: something is hot enough to cook its own insulation right now. This is the most urgent sign on this list.
What to do: track the smell to its strongest point. If it's near the DB or any switchboard, switch off the main MCB and call an electrician the same day. Don't air out the room and move on — the smell fading only means the heat cycled down, not that the damage healed.
2. Warm or Discoloured Switch Plates and Sockets
A switch or socket doing its job stays at room temperature. Warmth means resistance — a loose terminal, eroded contact, or an overloaded point — and resistance converts current into heat exactly where you don't want it. Brown or yellow "toasting" around a socket is that heat's history written on the wall.
What it means: a joint behind that plate is cooking in slow motion. The classic culprits in Surat homes: AC and geyser points running near capacity on aging terminals.
What to do: stop using that point and have it re-terminated or replaced. This is a 15-minute, low-cost repair — one of the best safety-per-rupee fixes in the trade.
3. Buzzing, Crackling, or Sizzling Sounds
Healthy electrical systems are silent. A faint buzz from a switchboard, DB, or ceiling junction is current arcing across a gap — a micro-lightning strike happening dozens of times per second, carbonizing contacts a little more with each cycle. Carbon conducts, so the arc grows.
What it means: an arc fault in progress. Arcing is the direct ignition mechanism of most electrical fires.
What to do: treat it like the smell — main MCB off if the sound is clear and continuous, electrician same day. Note that dimmer switches make a soft hum at low settings which is normal; a crackle or sizzle is never normal.
4. Flickering That Follows a Pattern
All homes flicker when the grid blinks. The dangerous kind is the patterned flicker: lights that dim every time the AC compressor kicks in, one room that flickers while others don't, or brightness that visibly wavers with no appliance changes.
What it means: a loose neutral or a failing joint somewhere upstream — a fault that heats up under load. A broken neutral in a 3-phase supply can also push over-voltage into half your appliances, which is its own expensive disaster.
What to do: this one deserves diagnosis rather than guesswork — an electrician with a clamp meter and voltage logger can localize it in one visit. Persistent patterned flickering plus any warmth or smell upgrades it to urgent.
5. Breakers That Trip — and Fuses That "Get Fixed" With Thicker Wire
An MCB that trips repeatedly is annoying, but it's the protection working. The genuinely dangerous configuration is the one that stops the tripping without fixing the cause: a bigger MCB than the wiring rating, a fuse rewired with thick copper strands, or the RCCB that "kept tripping so we bypassed it."
What it means: the alarm has been disconnected while the fire risk stayed. Wiring rated for 16A protected by a 32A breaker will cook long before that breaker notices. We still find bypassed protection in a shocking share of older Surat shops — usually installed years ago by whoever was cheapest that day.

The 60-Second Monthly Habit
Once a month, do a fire-sense walk of your home:
- Smell each switchboard and the DB up close.
- Touch the plates of heavy-load points (AC, geyser, kitchen) — they should be cool.
- Listen at the DB for two quiet seconds.
- Look for new discolouration around sockets.
Four senses, one minute, and it catches the majority of developing faults months before they matter.

Main MCB off if you can reach it safely — never water on an electrical fire — use a CO₂ or dry powder extinguisher if trained, get everyone out, and call the fire brigade (101) before anything else. Property is replaceable.
